"Back in late september of 1986 Peter Searles was an out-of-work actor who decided he'd interrupt a life of continual unemployment with a trip around South America, existing on five dollars a day. This is his monologue-cum-travelogue of what he experienced in Chile over the Christmas period. His desciptions of the dramatic Andean landscape are poetic, his story of an audition to get a job as a blonde sex-god in a cigarette advert are hilarious, and his account of the savage beating of an innocent man and woman by the army is stomach-churning. Searles's narrative, like the country he's depicting, is full of opposing emotions, but at the end of his stay he is certain where his conscience rests" |
